Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi is hosting a run of film-in-concert shows this December, with the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra performing the music live while each movie plays on the big screen. Four titles are on the bill — Encanto, Frozen, Home Alone 2 and The Lion King — and tickets for each start at Dhs80.

Here's the line-up. Encanto screens on Friday, December 18, with Lin-Manuel Miranda's award-winning songs performed live alongside the Madrigal family's story — expect a lot of singing along. Frozen follows on Saturday, December 19, pairing the score by Christophe Beck with that song everyone knows, plus a full evening of Anna and Elsa. Home Alone 2 also runs on December 19, a natural pick for anyone whose festive season isn't complete without Kevin McCallister causing chaos in New York, this time with the famous score played in the room. The run closes on Sunday, December 20 with The Lion King — Circle of Life, Hakuna Matata and Can You Feel the Love Tonight performed as Simba's story unfolds on screen.

The Armenian State Symphony Orchestra has toured this film-in-concert format internationally, and it's a format that works especially well for family crowds: kids get the movie, parents get the orchestra, and the big musical moments land harder when they're happening live a few metres away. John Williams fans will understand the appeal immediately — hearing a score like Jurassic Park's or Harry Potter's from a full orchestra changes the experience entirely, and Disney's catalogue is built for the same treatment.

Tickets are on sale via etihadarena.ae, with entry from Dhs80 per film — cheap enough to treat it as an outing rather than a splurge, and flexible enough that you could plausibly catch two shows across the long weekend.

Why it matters for travellers: these dates turn a regular Abu Dhabi stay into something more of an event. Etihad Arena sits on Yas Bay waterfront on Yas Island, so it pairs neatly with the island's bigger draws — Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, the Yas Waterworld park and the Formula 1 circuit are all close by, and there's a growing strip of restaurants along the marina for a pre-show dinner. If you're visiting the UAE in December anyway, this is a good excuse to add a night or two on Yas Island to the itinerary, and the early-evening showtimes make it doable even with younger children in tow.

If December dates are already booked, keep an eye on the arena's listings generally — film-in-concert nights have become a regular fixture at major Gulf venues, and this run is one of the more family-friendly line-ups they've put together.
