December is Dubai's sweet spot. The summer furnace has finally cooled off, the skies stay blue, and suddenly the city's beaches, walkways and pitches are usable again. For travellers visiting over the winter months, it's also the easiest time to get active without melting — and there's plenty on offer beyond the pool.

One of the simplest ways to move around is by bike. The wide, flat path circling the Dubai Marina waterway makes for an easy, scenic ride — quiet with birdsong in the morning, glittering with skyline views after dark. Careem Bike stations along the Marina Walkway rent by the minute (Dhs1.20/min, then Dhs10 per extra half hour on single trips), with daily, weekly and monthly passes available through the app if you plan to ride more than once.

Padel has exploded in popularity across the UAE, and it's easy to see why: the rules take minutes to learn, the game mixes tennis and squash, and it's social by design since it's played in pairs. Just Padel at Kite Beach runs from 6am to midnight daily, charging Dhs220 for a 45-minute slot or Dhs180 for an additional 45 minutes. Kite Beach is also the spot for volleyball, with courts available from 5am to 3am at Dhs100 per hour via volley.ae — and if you're travelling solo, organised pick-up games make it easy to join in.

For something more uniquely Dubai, head to Jumeirah 2nd Beach for clear-bottom kayaking. You paddle a see-through kayak along the coast with views of the Burj Khalifa and Jumeirah Bay Island, and there are options for sunrise-to-sunset trips, glow-in-the-dark night paddles, and photo-friendly extras like flower basket setups. Rates start at Dhs160 for one person and Dhs190 for two, with lifejackets and safety briefings included. It runs daily from roughly 6.30am to 4.30am, so night owls are covered too.

If team sport is more your thing, Rad Sports in Al Barsha runs one of the city's busiest 7-a-side football setups — more than 500 social players pass through daily, alongside leagues, tournaments and kids' sessions. A 60-minute pitch booking costs Dhs420, or Dhs600 for 90 minutes. Book ahead; popular evening slots fill fast.

Why it matters: winter is the season when Dubai's outdoor side actually makes sense, and these activities span budgets from a couple of dirhams per minute to a group pitch rental — most under Dhs250 per session. They suit everyone from solo travellers who want to meet people (beach volleyball, padel) to families looking for a memorable morning on the water (the kayaks). Pack trainers and swimwear, book the popular slots in advance, and plan the physical stuff for mornings or evenings when temperatures are at their best.
