Air France-KLM's Flying Blue programme has hit pause on a sudden devaluation of its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) scheme, after the change went live earlier this month without any warning to members.
Here's what happened. On 2 November 2026, Flying Blue quietly raised the cost of earning XP — the points that determine elite status — via SAF contributions from €10 per XP to €15 per XP. That's a 50% jump overnight. Members who had built status-qualification plans around SAF or charitable contributions, sometimes topping up XP they expected to earn from flights already booked, suddenly faced a much more expensive route to keeping their elite tier.
Following member pushback, Flying Blue reversed course. From 4 November, the previous €10-per-XP rate is back in force, and anyone who contributed between 2 and 4 November will be credited at the old rate too. The new €15 rate now takes effect on 1 December 2026, giving members roughly a month to complete contributions at the cheaper price or rethink their strategy.
What makes this notable is the tone. Tiffany Funk, Head of Flying Blue, openly admitted "we didn't handle the rollout well" and that the new rate went live "with unclear messaging and without notice". She also defended the scheme itself, arguing that even at €15 per XP, no other loyalty programme rewards SAF contributions more generously — including on award tickets.
Loyalty commentators have greeted the climbdown warmly while staying wary of the scheme itself. The critique is fair: buying status credit through an environmental contribution is a neat way for the airline to monetise status-chasing under a green banner, and a contribution doesn't erase the emissions of any individual flight. Still, the author's main point stands — devaluations happen, but springing them on members without notice breaks plans made in good faith, and the grace period plus retroactive protection is the fair way to do it.
Why should you care? If you hold Flying Blue elite status or are chasing it this qualification year, the practical takeaway is simple: any SAF or charity contributions you were planning should be made before 1 December 2026, when each XP will cost 50% more. Even if you're not a member, this is a rare example of a loyalty programme admitting a mistake and fixing the process rather than the messaging — a standard other programmes rarely meet.
