Porter Airlines has given Edmonton travellers a serious head start on winter escape planning, adding four seasonal non-stop routes from Edmonton International Airport to sunny spots in Mexico and the United States. All four roll out in November, and they include the airline's first international flights from Alberta.
The schedule kicks off with Puerto Vallarta, which began flying on November 3 and will run up to three times a week at peak. Phoenix follows on November 6 with daily flights at peak frequency — a handy option for snowbirds and golfers. Then on November 16, two more routes launch at once: Los Cabos and Las Vegas, each running up to four times weekly at peak. Porter is also selling vacation packages for Puerto Vallarta already, with Los Cabos packages coming soon.
Everything operates on Porter's 132-seat Embraer E195-E2, and the onboard experience is a big part of the pitch. There are no middle seats on any aircraft in the fleet, which alone is a selling point for a four-hour flight. Economy passengers get complimentary beer and wine served in actual glassware, premium snacks, and free Wi-Fi. Fresh meals are included with PorterReserve fares or can be bought with PorterClassic bookings.
The airline's vice president of network planning, Andrew Pierce, framed the expansion as part of Porter's growing North American network, while Edmonton International Airport's James Jackson called the addition of four routes in a single month a significant vote of confidence in the region.
For Alberta travellers, this changes the calculus for winter trips. Previously, reaching Mexico's Pacific coast or the US Southwest from Edmonton often meant connecting through Calgary or a US hub. Now it's a straight shot, and on a plane where you're not squeezed into a middle seat drinking from a plastic cup. Las Vegas becomes an easy weekend proposition, Phoenix a practical long-stay sun destination, and Puerto Vallarta or Los Cabos a proper beach holiday without the layover tax.
Who should care: Edmonton locals planning a winter getaway, snowbird-types pricing out Phoenix, and anyone who likes the idea of a low-fuss beach break with a decent glass of wine included. The routes are seasonal, so if a November-to-spring sun trip is on your list, it's worth booking while frequencies are fresh and launch fares are likely competitive.
