Zambia just got a lot more accessible from South Africa. FlySafair has started flying directly between Johannesburg and Lusaka, cutting out the need to connect through a third airport on one of the region's busiest business and leisure corridors.
The route runs five times a week — Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays — between OR Tambo International and Kenneth Kaunda International. Timings are geared towards maximising your day: the outbound flight leaves Johannesburg at 07:50 and touches down in Lusaka at 09:50, while the return leg departs at 10:50 and lands back at OR Tambo by 12:50. That means you can realistically fly in for a meeting and be home by lunch, or land mid-morning with a full day ahead of you.
Pricing starts at R2,800 from Johannesburg and R3,000 in the reverse direction, excluding fuel surcharges and subject to availability. FlySafair says the route responds to sustained demand, with chief marketing officer Kirby Gordon noting Lusaka has long been on customers' wish lists.
The bigger win for holidaymakers is what Lusaka unlocks. Zambia's capital is the springboard for some of southern Africa's finest experiences: Livingstone and Victoria Falls on the Zambezi, plus the wildlife-heavy Lower Zambezi and South Luangwa National Parks. Until now, getting there often meant routing through another country's hub — a hassle for anyone planning a shorter trip.
Five weekly flights also give travellers genuine flexibility rather than a single inconvenient departure. Whether it's a long weekend in the capital, a safari add-on, or a business trip, there's now a low-cost option that doesn't require a connection.
