Sheffield gets plenty of attention as the gateway to the Peak District and the hometown of the Arctic Monkeys, but a few miles from its centre sits a suburb that most visitors sail past. Fulwood, in south-west Sheffield, was a remote village for centuries before becoming part of the city in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today it keeps a village feel — local shops, leafy streets and marked woodland trails — while sitting barely three miles from the city centre. It's a 15-minute drive or under 40 minutes by bus from downtown Sheffield.

Food is a big part of the appeal. The Rising Sun Inn has served customers in some form since 1860, and in 2024 it became fully employee-owned under local Abbeydale Brewery. The kitchen leans on British produce — beef and game from the Peak District, fish landed daily — and the Sunday roast draws particular praise from diners, who also rate the prices and the welcome. Kids and dogs are allowed, there's a beer garden for rare sunny days, and if you want the roast, book ahead. For something different, Lavang is the area's upscale Indian restaurant, serving curries, biryanis and tandoori dishes à la carte; reviewers say they cross the city regularly just to eat there.

Outdoors, Forge Dam Park is the local green hub, with clearly marked woodland walks circling a pond. A restoration project finished in 2023 revived the pond's ecosystem, repaired footpaths and added new noticeboards, and the paths connect to wider trails across the area.

The shops are a quirky bunch. Blue Note Music Shop sells new and refurbished woodwind instruments — flutes, saxophones, oboes, bassoons — plus sheet music and accessories, and has a soundproof studio so you can try before you buy. For self-caterers, Nature's Way is a friendly greengrocer stocking local produce, meat and dairy.

One practical wrinkle for anyone flying in: Doncaster Sheffield Airport, nominally the closest at around 30 miles, remains closed as of 2026. Rail to Sheffield is the simplest route, or fly into Leeds Bradford or Manchester and travel on from there. If Fulwood leaves you hungry for more of the same — independent shops, good food, scenic paths — the Cotswolds market town of Nailsworth makes a natural follow-up.

For travellers, Fulwood is the kind of easy half-day add-on that works brilliantly: pair a Peak District hike or a day in Sheffield with a pub lunch, a walk around Forge Dam and a curry to finish. No overnight stay required, though it's a calm base if you'd rather skip the city noise.
