A century-old mountain hotel in Jasper, Alberta is turning its guest rooms over to the dead this Halloween. The Astoria Hotel, which first opened its doors in 1925, is teaming up with Jasper Theatre Productions for a two-night pop-up called the Astoria Haunted Hotel — an immersive haunted house spread across 12 themed rooms inside the actual building.

This isn't a walk-through-and-jump affair. The experience is built around a fictional mystery, so as you move from room to room you'll meet live scare actors, pick up clues and solve interactive puzzles while the story plays out around you. It's part theatre, part escape-room logic, part old-fashioned haunted house.

There are two versions depending on your nerve. The early session, running 6 to 7:30 p.m. on both nights, is family-friendly and aimed at kids and parents. The After Dark session from 8 to 10 p.m. dials things up for adults who want the full scare treatment. Tickets are $17.31 for youth aged 9 to 17 and $27.96 for adults, while children under 7 get in free. Adult tickets also come with a complimentary drink at De'd Dog Bar or Papa George's, both attached to or near the hotel. Book through Eventbrite or at the front desk.

The haunted hotel is the anchor of a wider Halloween takeover across Jasper, and if you're in town there's plenty more on. The Jasper Ghost Stories Tour runs several evenings from Connaught Drive at $25 plus fees. If you'd rather get your scares outdoors, there's a Haunted Full Moon Hike at Lake Annette ($15) under the night sky. The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge hosts a free Spooky Scavenger Hunt and a series of Halloween activities across several days, and the Rocky Horror Picture Show screens free at the Jasper Activity Centre. Halloween night itself stacks up nicely: a free cocktail party at Papa George's, the Atha-B Halloween Howler at the Athabasca Hotel, and a free party at De'd Dog Bar and Grill running until 1 a.m.

Why it matters: Jasper in late October is already a great shoulder-season play — fewer crowds, moody mountain scenery, and lodging easier to find than in summer. This lineup gives travellers a concrete reason to be there for Halloween specifically, and the split family/adult sessions make the main event work whether you're travelling with kids or a group of friends. Just note it runs two nights only, so timing is everything.
