JetBlue is giving its upgrade game a makeover. The Move to Mint certificates, introduced in 2022, are being rebranded as Premium Upgrade Certificates — a name change that reflects a bigger shift: they'll now work for the airline's new BlueFirst first class, not just Mint business class. The airline is also opening up more ways to earn them.

The earning side stays familiar at the top. Mosaic 3 status (150 tiles) and Mosaic 4 status (250 tiles) each come with four certificates, and Mosaic 4 members can pick up two more for every 100 tiles earned beyond 250. Remember how tiles work: one tile per $100 of qualifying JetBlue spending, or one tile per $1,000 of JetBlue credit card spending — so Mosaic 3 means either $15,000 in flights or $150,000 on the card.

The real change is in JetBlue's Perks You Pick programme. For the first time, Mosaic 2 members can choose a certificate when they clear that tier, and Mosaic 3 and 4 members can each grab one too — up to three extra certificates in total. There's a trade-off, though: picking a certificate means skipping the alternative at each level, which rises from 10,000 bonus points at Mosaic 2, to 20,000 at Mosaic 3, to 30,000 at Mosaic 4 (or perks like gifting Mosaic 3 status or a BlueHouse Lounge membership at the top tier).

On redemption, a Mosaic 4 member can theoretically hold eight certificates automatically, plus three more through Perks You Pick. Each certificate confirms an upgrade on one segment, from the moment of booking until two hours before departure. The standout feature is that there are no capacity controls — unlike Delta, United or American, if a premium seat is still on sale, a certificate can lock it in. The catch is dynamic pricing: an upgrade costs between one and four certificates per segment depending on how full the cabin is expected to be. JetBlue hasn't said whether BlueFirst upgrades will cap out lower than four, or whether domestic first class flights could cost as much as a transatlantic Mint hop — a detail worth watching.

For travellers who fly JetBlue regularly, this makes chasing Mosaic status noticeably more attractive. Stack these confirmed upgrades with the unlimited complimentary first class upgrades JetBlue is rolling out for top-tier Mosaic members, and the programme is starting to punch above its weight among US loyalty schemes. The flexibility to confirm a premium seat — even on a busy route — is genuinely rare in the US market, where upgrade lists and clearance windows rule. Just run the numbers before you pick: sometimes 30,000 bonus points may beat a single certificate, depending on how often you'd actually use it.
