Halloween treats in the Algarve usually mean supermarket sweets. This year, one café in Vilamoura is taking a more refined route: a limited run of dessert skulls, brains and googly-eyed monsters, all hand-built from French pâtisserie staples like mousse, praline and fruit compote.
Glee Boutique Café, based inside the Tivoli Marina Vilamoura hotel, is launching the collection from October 26 to 31, with prices between €3 and €8. It's the work of Patrick Mestre, Executive Sous-Chef of Pastry, who trained in France and has run Glee's pastry kitchen since the café opened in 2021. Seasonal editions are his thing — Halloween is just the most theatrical.
The centrepiece is The Skull (€8): vanilla mousse layered with wild strawberry compote on a coconut dacquoise, so you get smoothness, sharp fruit and a bit of chew in one slice. The Brain (€8) swaps theatrics for a tartlet — pecan cream, redcurrant compote and a cheese-and-redcurrant mousse, with a pleasant acidic edge cutting through the richness.
The One-Eyed Monster (€8) is the boldest combination: red berry and basil crémeux, red berry gel, almond financier and pistachio praline. Herbal basil against sweet berries and nutty praline sounds odd until you remember it's exactly the kind of pairing French pastry chefs love.
If you want a smaller souvenir or a gift, the Skull Bonbon (€3) is white chocolate filled with blackberry jelly and yoghurt ganache — sweet shell, tangy centre.
Practical bits: you can walk in and buy at the café, pre-order ahead, or order online via gleeboutiquecafe.pt. Glee isn't just a pastry counter — it also does speciality coffee, sandwiches and Afternoon Tea, and it's open to everyone, not only hotel guests.
Why bother for a holiday? If you're in the Algarve in late October — a lovely shoulder-season window with quieter beaches and mild weather — this is an easy, fun detour between Vilamoura's marina and the beach. It also makes a good stop if you're travelling with kids around Halloween: the spooky visuals land instantly, but the quality is proper pâtisserie rather than themed sugar. Go earlier in the day if you want the full range; limited editions like this tend to sell through.
