November gets a bad rap as the awkward gap between autumn and winter, but that in-between lull is exactly what makes it a smart month to travel. Crowds thin out, prices soften, and by the final week the first Christmas lights are flickering on across Europe.
Vienna leads the festive charge. The markets at Schönbrunn Palace and Stephansplatz open on 6 November, with the big one at Rathausplatz following on the 13th — weeks before most cities get going. Between mugs of mulled wine, the short days are a good excuse to duck into the Kunsthistorisches Museum or wander the Belvedere and Hofburg palaces without elbowing through summer tour groups.
If you'd rather dodge the cold entirely, Fuerteventura is one of Europe's most reliable bets for late-autumn sun. November brings pleasant beach weather without summer's scorch, the island is among the cheapest in the Canaries, and the sun sets later than on most of the mainland — a genuine plus if grey northern afternoons get you down. There's new places to stay too: the Elba Corralejo Resort & Spa opens on 1 November with 478 rooms, an eye-watering 20 swimming pools and a big wellness and family setup.
Sportier travellers have the 43rd Athens Marathon on 7-8 November, which follows the legendary route from Marathon to the Panathenaic Stadium. Even from the sidelines, it's a great excuse to see Athens once the punishing heat has gone.
Berlin runs its Science Week from 1-10 November under the theme "In Touch", with talks, workshops and performances across the city — the public weekend of 6-8 November is the easiest time to drop in. And in Portugal, the Alentejo region (tipped as a breakout destination for next year) hosts its International Hot Air Balloon Festival from 7-12 November, running since 1997. Pair it with Borba's Vine and Wine Festival, 11-15 November, for tastings and local food.
A few new hotels are worth flagging: Hilton's Outset Collection debuts in Europe with Casa Verbena Madrid, a 45-room boutique property on the pedestrianised Calle de Preciados, a short walk from Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor. In the Netherlands, the Van der Valk Exclusief Hotel Maastricht-Maas opens with 113 rooms and a fifth-floor wellness area on the banks of the River Maas.
Thinking further ahead? The last week of November lets you hit Europe's biggest Christmas markets — Strasbourg, Nuremberg, Prague — before December's crush. It's also the moment to lock in winter-sun trips to the Canaries or Madeira, book Christmas and New Year travel before prices spike, and scope out new Alpine openings for ski season, including The First Cortina in Italy and The Ski Lodge in Verbier.
Why it matters: November rewards flexible travellers — fewer people, cultural events and first-dibs on the festive season.
