Bonn-based German cruise line Phoenix Reisen is adding a fourth major ship to its fleet. The Insignia, a 700-guest vessel built in 1998 that currently sails for US luxury line Oceania Cruises, will transfer to Phoenix in November 2027 and be renamed the Alvara. Terms of the deal haven't been disclosed.

Before passengers step aboard, the ship heads to the Lloyd Werft yard in Bremerhaven in September 2027 for a refit. There it will get Phoenix's unmistakable turquoise livery and a round of modifications to match the onboard style of the rest of the fleet. Phoenix managing director Benjamin Krumpen praised the ship's condition, noting it's well maintained and already fitted for shore power — a plus for ports that offer cleaner electrical hookups. Ship management will stay with BSM, and hotel operations go to sea chefs, both long-standing Phoenix partners.

The first season is a mix: a run of short cruises, a Christmas sailing, and two longer Mediterranean voyages. Booking opens online on October 23, 2026, with the itineraries appearing in the Phoenix magazine (November 6, 2026) and the "Seereisen 2028" catalog (December 18, 2026).

One quirk to know: Phoenix won't christen the ship on its maiden voyage. The naming ceremony takes place in Hamburg on November 26, 2027 — deliberately chosen because it's the company's 54th founding anniversary. If you're keen on the full fanfare, that Hamburg date is the one to watch, not the first sailing.

For travellers, this matters if you like Phoenix's relaxed, German-speaking, family-run style but want a ship that's newer and smaller than some of its fleetmates. At around 700 guests, the Alvara is an intimate option — closer in feel to boutique cruising than the big resort ships. It also opens a window on second-hand cruise deals in general: ships passed between lines often keep their good bones while gaining the new operator's character and pricing. Watch the November catalogs if a short Christmas-market-season sailing or a Med itinerary on a smaller ship sounds appealing.
