A neighbourhood bar in Carvoeiro has turned quiz nights and community spirit into real support for the firefighters who protect the Algarve each summer. The Wandering Fools, which opened in January on the main road into the village, handed more than €1,150 to Debby Burton, founder of the Associação Alerta de Incêndio Florestal (Forest Fire Alert), at a presentation on Tuesday, October 13.

It is the second time the bar's patrons have dug deep. An earlier collection in May raised over €550, and much of the money has come from the crowds who show up for the Tuesday quiz nights. Owner David Larson has encouraged donations since the doors first opened, and the bar has quickly become a gathering spot for locals and expats alike.

So where does the money go? Alerta supports the Bombeiros — the volunteer and professional firefighters who cover the Algarve and Lower Alentejo — and it focuses on the unglamorous essentials. During fire season, stations routinely run short of portable food and drink, medical supplies and, remarkably, dry socks. Alerta's volunteers work through the season making sure those items reach the crews.

When the coffers allow, the charity goes further. Past purchases have included replacement uniforms for kit damaged on duty, personal protective equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic, and a defibrillator that serves both firefighters and the wider community. The association also runs an active Facebook group where volunteers post wildfire updates and residents swap information — a genuinely useful resource for anyone living in or travelling to the region during the risky summer months.

There is a way to join in next: The Wandering Fools and Alerta are hosting The Great Carvoeiro Chili Cook-Off on Sunday, December 6. Entry is a €5 donation, which buys you samples of the competing chilli dishes and a judging vote.

Why should travellers care? The Algarve's fire season is a real feature of any summer visit, and the crews who battle blazes in the hills above the coast are largely supported by donations and community fundraising like this. If you are staying in the Carvoeiro area, dropping into the bar for a quiz night or the chilli cook-off is an easy way to put something back while enjoying the local scene. Details on Alerta are at algarvefire.info, and both the charity and the bar keep active Facebook pages.
