If Manhattan's crowds start to feel heavy, there's a ready-made escape about an hour away: Mahwah, a Bergen County suburb of roughly 25,500 people right on the New York state line, tucked against the Ramapo Mountains with the Ramapo River running through it.

The town's big draw is space. With about 5,000 acres of recreational land, Mahwah has earned the nickname "Bergen County's Parkland." The standout is Ramapo Valley County Reservation, a 4,000-acre park ranked by Tripadvisor among the town's top attractions. Trails range from easy lakeside strolls to steep uphill hikes, with waterfalls, ponds and pet-friendly paths along the way. On clear days, overlooks frame the Manhattan skyline in the distance. Weekends get busy, so weekday visits are more peaceful.

Families tend to gravitate to Darlington County Park, which has summer swimming and a kiddie splash zone, plus year-round hiking, biking, picnicking and catch-and-release fishing against a backdrop of the Ramapo Mountains. In winter, skis and snowboards come out for the slopes at Campgaw Mountain Ski Center. If you'd rather not hike at all, a scenic drive along Ramapo Valley Road connects to Ramapo Mountain State Forest.

Then there's the food, which leans satisfyingly retro. New Jersey calls itself the "Diner Capital of the World," and Mahwah's State Line Diner is often voted the state's best. Open 24 hours since 1976, it's known for buttermilk pancakes, French toast and famously generous portions at fair prices. For lunch, Mahwah Bar and Grill does classic pub fare, including well-regarded 8-ounce burgers and wings, while Roxanne's turns out brick-oven pizzas and pasta dishes with equally large servings. When it's time to splurge, RP Prime Steakhouse serves dry-aged cuts — the 22-ounce bone-in prime rib eye is the showstopper — and draws reviews praising both the service and the hospitality. Weekend reservations are smart, though walk-ins are accepted.

Getting there is straightforward. NJ Transit trains connect from New York Penn Station, and buses run direct to and from the Port Authority Bus Terminal. The nearest airports are LaGuardia and Newark Liberty, both roughly an hour's drive away. Once you're in town, though, you'll want a car — Mahwah is spread out, and the best parks and viewpoints aren't all walkable from the train station.

Overnight options include the Homewood Suites by Hilton Mahwah, a frequent pick with visitors. Niche ranks the town among New Jersey's best places to live, and it's easy to see the appeal for a weekend too: mountain air in the morning, a proper diner breakfast or a prime rib eye by evening, and the whole of New York City an hour back down the road if you want it.

Mahwah suits travellers who like their city breaks with an off-switch — hikers, families with kids, and anyone chasing fall foliage or a low-key ski day without venturing far from the Northeast corridor.
