Singapore collectibles brand Play Nation has planted its flag in Kuala Lumpur, opening a flagship pop-up at The Exchange TRX that leans hard into Malaysian nostalgia as much as global character franchises.

The pop-up, which officially opened on 24 September, is the clearest sign yet that the company — founded nearly two decades ago — wants a serious slice of Malaysia's collector scene. Co-founder and CEO Kai Jun Wong says the country has long been part of the brand's fanbase, and the TRX space follows earlier collaborations and promotions here.

The star of the show is the Play Nation Heritage Series: tiny building-block versions of traditional shophouses, neighbourhood provision shops and kopitiam, the beloved local coffee shops. That local flavour extends to the merchandise, with kaya butter toast laptop sleeves and tote bags themed around coffee and milk tea — souvenirs that actually feel like Malaysia rather than generic mall fare.

For fans of bigger character names, there's plenty too. Think Care Bears plush blind boxes, Sanrio accessories and LINE Friends building sets riffing on Korean convenience-store products. If you'd rather make something yourself, a hands-on activity lets visitors build ocean-themed decorative bottles from miniature figurines, sand, shells and pebbles for RM29.90 — or free with a minimum spend of RM150.

There are some decent deals running if you time it right: Care Bears wireless Bluetooth earbuds are RM69.90 (down from RM129.90) throughout October, and the Heritage Tiffin Carrier drops to RM39.90 in November.

Not near TRX? Play Nation has also set up a standalone pop-up at Intermark Mall, plus retail spaces inside selected Parkson outlets at 1 Utama, IOI City Mall, Sunway Velocity, Setia City Mall and Labuan. The flagship itself sits on the Concourse Level of The Exchange TRX and opens daily from 10am to 10pm, so it slots easily into a shopping day downtown.

For travellers, this is a low-effort, fun stop: the Heritage Series minis make genuinely local gifts, the character collabs will pull in Sanrio and Care Bears fans, and the TRX location means you can pair it with the mall's dining and rooftop park. Budget an hour, some ringgit for blind boxes, and maybe an extra bag for the tote you didn't plan on buying.
