Ponant Explorations may be a boutique luxury cruise line, but its loyalty scheme punches above its weight. The Ponant Yacht Club has four tiers with playful nautical names — Major, Admiral, Grand Admiral and Commodore — and unlike many cruise programs, it hands out genuinely useful perks from the very first level. Better yet, your status is based on lifetime sailings and never expires, so there's no annual requalification scramble.
Earning credit couldn't be simpler: every sailing on any of Ponant's 13 ships counts as one point, regardless of trip length or cabin type. Sailings with Paul Gauguin Cruises count too, since the South Pacific line joined the same group in 2019 and now shares the Yacht Club as its official program. One catch worth knowing: as of October 2025, cruises only credit at the end of the voyage, and group bookings or charters no longer earn status at all — only individual bookings count.
So what do you actually get? After just two sailings you reach Major, unlocking a 5% discount on future cruises, a €50 per-person onboard credit and free laundry for up to two items a day. Four sailings makes you an Admiral: the discount rises to 7.5%, the credit to €100, laundry to five items daily, plus a 20% discount on onboard purchases and a cabin category upgrade when one is available. Grand Admiral (seven sailings) pushes the fare discount to 10% and the credit to €150, adds a 25% onboard discount and waives change fees if you move your cruise date at least 90 days out (150 for expedition sailings). At the top, Commodore (20 sailings) means 12.5% off fares, €200 in onboard credit, an upgrade at booking, priority boarding at some ports and a dedicated phone line for French speakers.
The fine print matters. The fare discount applies only to port-to-port prices, excluding taxes and transfers. The onboard spending discount skips shore excursions, premium spirits and champagne, prestige boutique items, and exceptional wines on Le Commandant Charcot, the line's polar icebreaker. Onboard credits can't be used for prebooked tours or gratuities.
There's also a status match program, which is rare in cruising. Hold elite status with lines such as Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian, Regent, Seabourn or Silversea and you can fast-track into the equivalent Yacht Club tier before you even sail. A Royal Caribbean Diamond Plus member, for example, can match straight in as an Admiral.
Why should a traveller care? Ponant's fares often start around $500 per person per day, so even the entry-level 5% discount means real money on a week-long sailing. If you're eyeing an expedition to Antarctica, the Arctic or French Polynesia and might sail with Ponant or Paul Gauguin more than once, the Yacht Club rewards repeat trips faster and more tangibly than most cruise loyalty schemes — and your rank, whether Admiral or Commodore, is yours for life.
