A dinner out in Maui can now leave more than a tip. Hana Hou Hospitality, the restaurant group behind several well-known spots on the island, runs a Round-Up Program that lets diners round their check up to the nearest dollar, with every cent going to a local nonprofit. No fees, no admin skim — 100% of the contributions are passed on.

Four restaurants currently take part: Māla Ocean Tavern on the ocean in Ka'anapali, Coco Deck Lahaina, Pizza Paradiso and Pineapple Robot. The process couldn't be simpler — ask your server about the round-up when the bill arrives.

The group rotates its beneficiary each quarter, and the recipients tell you a lot about what matters on Maui right now. The first two quarters of the year supported the Lahaina Community Land Trust, which is helping the town recover and rebuild after the 2023 wildfires. Through September 30, donations are flowing to Kahākūkahi Ocean Academy, a program that gives young people on the island ocean-based education, mentorship and cultural connection — the name K.O.A. is fitting, since it means warrior. From October through the end of the year, contributions will go to the Lahaina Restoration Foundation, which preserves the town's historic landmarks and cultural heritage for future generations.

For visitors, this is one of the lowest-effort ways to give back to a destination that leans heavily on tourism and, in Lahaina especially, is still recovering. Rounding up a $86 check to $90 costs you pocket change across a week of meals, yet across hundreds of diners it adds up to real money for cultural preservation, environmental stewardship and community programs. It also works well alongside the more deliberate choices travellers make — booking local operators, respecting beach and reef etiquette, learning the pronunciations of the places they visit.

If you're already planning meals at these restaurants, you lose nothing by opting in; the only effort required is a yes when your server asks. And if you want to do more, all four organizations accept donations directly, so you can follow up after your trip too. It's a small mechanic with an outsized effect — exactly the kind of travel habit worth copying.

Coco Deck Lahaina sits in the heart of the rebuilt Lahaina dining scene, while Māla Ocean Tavern is a longtime favourite for sunset dinners. Pizza Paradiso and Pineapple Robot round out a lineup that spans casual and sit-down, so there's a round-up opportunity whatever your plans — a quick lunch slice or a slow evening by the water.
