Luxury river cruising in India is about to get a lot bigger. Scenic Group has signed a long-term partnership with Assam Bengal Navigation (ABN), committing to two ultra-luxury river ships in India by 2029-30 — and opening up the Brahmaputra in the country's northeast as a brand-new cruising route.
The move builds on Scenic's existing India plans. Scenic Aura, a boutique ship carrying just 44 guests, launches on the Hooghly River in West Bengal in October 2027, anchoring an all-inclusive collection of river cruises and land journeys through India and Sri Lanka. The company says strong demand for that inaugural program prompted the expansion.
The Brahmaputra is the interesting part for travellers. While the Hooghly threads through colonial-era towns, temples and palaces in West Bengal, the Brahmaputra cuts through Assam's remote riverside villages, wildlife territory and distinctly different cultural traditions — a side of India most luxury itineraries never touch. It's the river that runs past Kaziranga country, famous for its one-horned rhinos, and through some of the least-visited corners of the subcontinent.
The partnership pairs Scenic's global luxury brand and distribution with ABN's decades of hands-on experience running boats on Indian rivers. Scenic founder and chairman Glen Moroney called India a market with extraordinary potential and described Aura as the first step in a long-term commitment, while ABN's founder Ashish Phookan said the tie-up could significantly expand India's position on the global river-cruise map.
Details of the Brahmaputra ships and itineraries are still under wraps, but the 2027-28 Hooghly season gives a taste of the format: a 10-night river cruise through West Bengal combined with land touring across cities, sacred sites, historic palaces and artisan communities — the all-inclusive, small-ship model Scenic applies on Europe's rivers, transplanted to India.
For luxury cruisers who've already ticked off the Danube, the Rhine or the Mekong, India's rivers are fast becoming the next frontier. With two ships and two rivers locked in, this looks like a serious, sustained play rather than an experiment — worth keeping on the radar for 2027 and beyond, especially if wildlife-rich Assam appeals more than the well-worn Golden Triangle.
