Edmonton has a new reason to linger on 82nd Avenue. Second Shelf Books has officially opened its doors in the city's French Quarter, and it's shaping up to be more than just another place to buy paperbacks — it's a family tribute with a seriously good shelf lineup.
The store is the work of owner Misty, who opened it in memory of her late brother Noah, who passed away earlier this year. The two shared a deep bond over reading, and Noah had long encouraged her to run her own shop filled with stories they loved. He even joked that if he ever won the lottery, he'd buy her a bookstore of her own. After his death, Misty made it happen. Even the name carries meaning: Noah was the second child in a family of five — the 'second shelf' on the family bookcase.
As for the stock, there's plenty to browse. Second Shelf carries both new and used titles across a wide range of genres, from fantasy and sci-fi to non-fiction and everything in between. It's not strictly books, either — the shop also sells puzzles, games, stuffed animals and stationery, which makes it an easy one-stop gift stop. Book-related events and a book club are planned for the future, so it's worth following along if you like your reading social.
Not in Edmonton? The store also sells online and ships across Canada. And if you're local with a bursting bookshelf at home, Second Shelf buys used books by appointment — you can trade them in for store credit via a form on the website. A tidy way to refresh your collection and support a small business at the same time.
For travellers, this is a classic 'wander Whyte Avenue' stop. The store sits in the heart of Old Strathcona, one of Edmonton's most walkable neighbourhoods, packed with cafés, theatres and vintage shops. Grab a used novel in the morning, settle into a nearby coffee spot, and you've got a properly cozy Alberta afternoon. Opening hours are generous: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The address is Unit K, 8927 82nd Ave NW.
Indie bookstores like this one are increasingly rare and increasingly worth seeking out — and this one comes with a story that makes browsing feel a little more meaningful.
