Edmonton's week ahead packs in a bit of everything: warm-ish daytime weather, a Madonna tribute night, a pumpkin walk in the woods, and a couple of fresh spots to shop and browse.
Start with the forecast, because it's all over the place. Environment Canada has Wednesday, Oct. 21 pegged as the warmest day at 14°C, but nights dip below freezing nearly every evening. Thursday brings rain around 3°C, and there's even a chance of flurries on Saturday. Pack layers if you're heading out — the classic Edmonton October swing is in full effect.
Music fans have a solid Sunday option. The Winspear Centre hosts a Madonna evening on Oct. 25, with Canadian musicians performing live renditions of classics like "Vogue," "Material Girl" and "Like a Prayer." It's a tribute show rather than the Material Girl herself, but the programme covers her biggest hits.
Shoppers get two openings. A combined Suzy Shier and Le Chateau boutique debuts at Kingsway Mall, with 40% off the entire store for the Saturday grand opening — and the first 50 customers to make a purchase receive a gift card worth up to $250. If that's not your speed, the city's newest independent bookshop, Second Shelf Books, has opened in the French Quarter, stocking both new and used titles across fantasy, sci-fi, non-fiction and more.
For a proper fall outing, drive out to the Forbidden Forest Pumpkin Walk near Drayton Valley. Lanterns and carved pumpkins line the trails after dark, and there's a pumpkin-carving contest, live music and local food trucks through the evening. It runs this week and is about as autumnal as Alberta gets.
Why it matters: if you're in Edmonton or planning a quick Alberta stop this week, you can stack a morning of shopping at Kingsway, an afternoon browsing the French Quarter's new bookstore and an evening drive to the pumpkin walk — with the Winspear show as your Sunday finale. Just keep an eye on that Saturday flurry risk before you commit to the forest trail.
