Silversea has laid out its most ambitious Antarctica programme yet for 2026-27, and the centrepiece is a hotel you can only reach by expedition ship or charter plane: The Cormorant at 55 South, billed as the Southernmost Hotel on Earth. The official grand opening lands on November 5, 2026, but guests on earlier departures will get a preview of the property before the ribbon is cut.
The season runs through March 2027 and puts three ships to work — Silver Endeavour, Silver Wind and Silver Cloud — across 40 voyages, 29 of which are fly-cruise itineraries that each include a stay at The Cormorant. Two operational firsts stand out: the Silver Endeavour will depart from King George Island for the first time, while the Silver Wind adds a new gateway at Puerto Williams in Chile, just across the Beagle Channel from Ushuaia.
The fly-cruise model is the real hook for anyone dreading the Drake Passage. Fourteen sailings fly guests over the notoriously rough stretch of ocean in both directions, while fifteen one-way departures split the difference — a flight one way and a ship crossing the other. Eleven voyages will still do it the classic way, crossing the Drake by sea in both directions from Puerto Williams. Every sailing bundles in charter flights, expedition programming and Zodiac outings.
Itineraries run from six to 21 nights and stretch well past the Antarctic Peninsula. Highlights include an 18-night Falklands-to-Peninsula round trip on Silver Wind departing November 7; four 15-night South Georgia and Elephant Island voyages on Silver Cloud from November 9; a 12-night Antarctic Circle crossing on December 9; a 15-night Christmas departure on December 22; and the season's longest sailing, a 21-night Antarctica-to-Buenos Aires run departing March 4, 2027.
Why it matters: staying at an actual hotel in Antarctica is a genuinely new wrinkle in expedition travel. It softens one of the harshest edges of a southern voyage — camping-style conditions — while the fly options cut out the two-day Drake bashing that puts many people off. If you've been waiting for a comfortable, shorter entry point to the White Continent, this season is built for you.
