A working barn in Cochrane, Alberta, is getting a spooky makeover this Halloween season. The Haunted Hayloft, a first-of-its-kind event for the town, takes over the Cochrane and District Agricultural Society grounds for three nights, turning the indoor barn into a walk-through haunted house with themed rooms and live scare actors.
Inside, visitors move through rooms with names that give a fair warning of what's coming: the Haunted Toybox, the Clown Room, the Slaughter Room, the Cemetery and the Haunted Dining Room. Actors lurk throughout the course, primed for jump scares when you least expect them.
Not everyone wants to be scared out of their skin, though, which is where Sunset Hour comes in. Each night from 5 to 6 p.m., the lights stay bright and the scare actors stay home, making it the sensible slot for younger kids or anyone who'd rather skip the adrenaline.
The event runs Thursday, Oct. 29 through Saturday, Oct. 31. Doors are open 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursday and 5 to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Tickets are priced at $11.85 for adults, $8.69 for children and seniors, or $32.89 for a family of four pass. One important catch: there are no sales at the door, so you'll need to book ahead online. You can arrive any time during the hours on your booked night, but barn capacity is limited, so expect a queue during peak times.
The Cochrane and District AG Grounds sit at 43080 Bow Valley Trail, roughly 20 minutes northwest of Calgary, and there's a large parking lot with free parking for the event. For Calgarians, it's an easy evening trip; for visitors, it pairs neatly with a weekend in the city or a foothills road trip toward the Rockies.
Why it matters: affordable, family-friendly Halloween events close to a major city can be thin on the ground, and a sub-$12 ticket with a dedicated no-scare hour covers both the thrill-seekers and the faint of heart. Just don't leave the ticket purchase to Halloween night.
