Sign-up bonuses on US travel credit cards are having a strong moment, with several offers at or near their historical highs this October. If you've been sitting on the fence about adding a card before a big trip, there's a lot on the table right now — some worth north of $1,000 in travel value.

The headline act is the American Express Platinum, where eligible applicants can land up to 175,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $12,000 in the first six months. The card carries a hefty $895 annual fee, but it's stacked with credits: lounge access across more than 1,550 airport lounges, $600 in hotel credits, $200 in Uber Cash plus Uber One credits, $200 in airline fee credits, $300 towards streaming subscriptions, $400 in Resy dining credits, and even credits for CLEAR+ and lululemon. Used properly, the perks can outweigh the fee for frequent flyers.

Chase's Sapphire Reserve is back at 100,000 points after $6,000 of spend in three months. It earns 8x on Chase Travel bookings, 4x on flights and hotels booked direct, and 3x on dining worldwide, and cardholders get access to every Chase Sapphire Lounge — with new outposts opening at LAX and Dallas to join the popular Philadelphia and LaGuardia locations. Its points transfer to a wide bench of airline and hotel partners, from United and Air Canada to Hyatt and Singapore Airlines.

United has bumped up bonuses across its personal card line-up too, with offers now reaching 100,000 miles on the top-tier Club card once you factor in an extra 10,000 miles for adding an authorized user. Cardmembers get at least 10% off United award prices, plus access to extra Polaris business class award space — a meaningful boost if you're chasing a long-haul lie-flat seat.

Elsewhere, the Citi Strata Elite offers 75,000 points after $6,000 in three months, with calendar-year credits (including a $200 'Splurge' credit that works on American Airlines) that can effectively be claimed twice in your first year. The Ink Business Preferred returns at 100,000 points, useful even for solo travellers who can put personal expenses on a small business card. And the Capital One Venture X, a favourite for its comparatively modest fee, offers 75,000 miles after $4,000 of spend with transfers to 15-plus loyalty programs.

Why does this matter for a traveller? Because points earned through these bonuses can cover flights that would otherwise cost four figures — a business class seat to Europe or Asia can often be booked outright on one or two sign-up bonuses. The catches to watch: minimum spending requirements (typically $4,000-$12,000 in three to six months), annual fees that range from $95 to $895, and the fact that welcome offers vary by applicant. If you can meet the spend organically and will actually use the perks, applying while offers are at their peak is where the real value sits.
