A sweetened sign-up deal has landed on what's arguably the most unusual airline card in the US market: the Citi / AAdvantage Business World Elite Mastercard. For a limited time it's offering 75,000 American Airlines AAdvantage bonus miles after $5,000 in spending within the first five months, and the $99 annual fee is waived for the first 12 months. Note the fee rises to $150 for existing cardmembers from 24 January 2027, though new approvals keep the first year free regardless.

The real hook isn't the bonus — it's how the card handles Loyalty Points, the currency American uses to determine status. Put spending on an employee card and both that employee and the primary cardholder earn status credit from the same purchases. $125,000 in eligible employee-card spending generates 125,000 Loyalty Points each — enough for both people to reach Platinum Pro, and the equivalent oneworld Emerald tier when paired with Citi Executive card bonuses. No personal American card does this; a personal card only credits one person. American has listed the dual-earning mechanism as valid through the end of 2028.

The maths can work nicely for couples who run businesses. One documented scenario: two people each hold a Citi Executive card, which now adds 10,000 bonus Loyalty Points at each of four thresholds (50,000, 90,000, 165,000 and 240,000 points in a qualifying year) — and those bonuses trigger on total account activity, not on card spending itself. Combine that with $105,000 on an employee card and you get 125,000 Loyalty Points each, enough for two Platinum Pro and oneworld Emerald statuses without flying a single status-qualifying mile beyond what the spend represents.

Beyond the status play, the card earns 3 miles per dollar on AAdvantage Hotels and AAdvantage Cars bookings and 2 miles per dollar in one chosen category (US shipping, office supply stores, or US advertising). Miles accrue to an AAdvantage Business account and can be transferred to individual member accounts whenever you like. Cardholders get a $100 annual inflight credit covering food, drinks and Wi-Fi, a first checked bag free on eligible domestic flights, preferred boarding for the primary cardmember and up to four companions, 10% off American Airlines Vacations packages, and no foreign transaction fees. Spend $30,000 in a cardmembership year and you'll earn a certificate for a $99 companion ticket (plus taxes) on eligible domestic Main Cabin round trips.

Why should a traveller care? Because American's status programme now runs on Loyalty Points rather than flight activity, businesses and even freelancers with real card spend can shortcut their way to lounge access, free upgrades and oneworld perks — and this is the only airline card anywhere that lets two people share the credit. If you and a partner both want American status without chasing flights, the timing of this bigger offer makes it worth a look. Frequent flyer enthusiasts at View from the Wing flagged the deal.
