There are faster ways to get from Vancouver to Jasper. There are not many better ones. The Rocky Mountaineer's Journey Through the Clouds route takes two full days to cross from British Columbia's Pacific coast into Alberta's mountain country, and the train doesn't stop once along the way — you sleep overnight in Kamloops and reboard in the morning. The point isn't speed. It's the scenery.
Day one follows the Fraser River, a historic waterway central to First Nations communities and home to some of the world's biggest salmon runs. The line cuts through remote canyons and forest you simply can't reach by road, which is where the wildlife sightings come in: bald eagles early on, white-tailed deer, flocks of bighorn sheep, and — for lucky passengers — black bears. Near the Gold Rush town of Yale, the river narrows at Hell's Gate, a stretch of violent rapids named by 19th-century explorer Simon Fraser, who clearly found it intimidating. Further along, the fertile Fraser Valley gives way to desert-like country around Lytton, one of Canada's driest spots and holder of the country's hottest recorded temperature.
The train averages a gentle 30mph and slows right down at scenic highlights — Pyramid Falls, a near-100-metre cascade visible only from the tracks, and the snow-capped bulk of Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies at nearly 4,000 metres. Day two ends crossing the Continental Divide into Jasper National Park, all sharper peaks and dense spruce forest.
Onboard, it's deliberately indulgent. Silver Leaf service gets you glass-dome windows and a separate dining carriage; Gold Leaf adds a covered open-air viewing platform, which reviewers say is worth the upgrade for feeling the mountain air directly. Food is locally sourced — think seared albacore tuna followed by bitter chocolate torte — and drinks flow generously. Most of the route has no wifi or phone signal, so it doubles as an enforced digital detox.
Packages start from £1,379 per person in Silver Leaf and £1,871 in Gold Leaf, with direct flights to Vancouver from the UK from £628 return. For travellers who want the Rockies without renting a car or hiking for their views, this is slow travel with the hard work removed.
