Booking platform Sirvoy analysed accommodation reservations across its network of independent hotels, guesthouses, hostels and holiday rentals to find out where travellers most often book within seven days of arriving. The answer: pretty much everywhere in the top 10, where over half of all bookings are made inside that week-long window.
Thailand tops the list, and by a decent margin. Nearly 75% of accommodation there is booked within a week of check-in, and more than half of travellers book on the day of arrival or the day before. That said, if you're eyeing a spontaneous Thai escape right now, brace for monsoon season — hot and cheap, yes, but also very wet. The same caveat applies to the Philippines, second on the list with 71.7% of bookings made last minute, where the rain tends to stick around until October.
Australia takes third place with 61.2% of bookings inside seven days, and the timing works in your favour: spring has already pushed Sydney temperatures into the 20s, ideal for swimming, surfing and city exploring. Mexico follows in fourth at 59.7%, pairing beaches with history and culture, while New Zealand rounds out the top five at 58.3% — and being a genuinely year-round destination, it's a safe spontaneous bet whatever the month.
Indonesia claims sixth place (55.8%), before the ranking turns European. Norway is seventh, with 53.8% of bookings made within a week and a striking 39.1% on the day of travel or the day before. Finland (53.3%), the Netherlands (52.3%) and Sweden (51.9%) complete the top 10. None of these are famous for reliable sunshine, but all four are built for outdoor adventures — fjords, lakes, islands and national parks — where checking the forecast the night before matters less than having the right layers packed.
The takeaway for travellers is that spontaneity is very much viable in 2026. In these destinations, walk-up and next-day rates are part of the normal booking rhythm, meaning late decisions can sometimes land you good availability rather than sold-out disappointment. It's especially handy if you work around school-holiday crowds or can travel off-peak. Just keep an eye on the season: monsoon rains in Southeast Asia are the main thing standing between you and a cheap, last-ditch beach fix.
