A former tea planter's private residence in the heart of Sri Lanka's tea country has just opened its doors to guests. Uga Halloowella, which welcomed its first visitors in January 2025, is a five-star restoration of a colonial-era estate near Hatton, perched 1,444m above sea level at the centre of the Norwood tea plantation.
The building has a story worth telling: it once belonged to Major Elton Lane, a tea plantation owner who flew for the Royal Air Force in the First World War. Today it keeps the old-world feel — mahogany-panelled lounge, hand-painted tropical wallpaper, vintage floral sofas and two enormous fireplaces — while adding contemporary comforts like an infinity-edged pool overlooking the Castlereagh Reservoir and an English country garden.
It's intimate by design: just six rooms and suites in pastel pinks, blues and greens, with antique dark-wood furniture, chandeliers, king-size beds and marble bathrooms. Larger suites add clawfoot baths and wood-burning stoves. Every room category comes with butler service, and staff earn particular praise for warmth without hovering.
Dining leans into the region's heritage. Sri Lankan curry is on offer at every meal, egg hoppers appear at breakfast, and evening menus range from Western fish and meat to a 'Sri Lankan Discovery' lineup featuring Negombo pork curry with milk rice. All-inclusive covers selected wines, beer and spirits — plus laundry (six pieces per suite daily) and a high tea served in bamboo bento boxes that reviewers say is unmissable.
The setting is the real draw. Misty pine valleys, vivid green tea rows and the vast reservoir below make for blissful quiet, and there's plenty to do: an included tea factory tour and tasting, guided hikes, bikes to borrow (it's hilly — be warned), and trail-camera footage from the resident naturalist showing leopards, palm civets, barking deer and porcupines. Adam's Peak is nearby, as is the newly launched Pekoe Trail, a 300km walking route threading through the hills.
Getting there takes commitment: roughly four and a half hours by road from Colombo, or a 30-minute Cinnamon Air seaplane hop for those who'd rather fly in style. There's no spa building, but massages can be booked in a garden treatment room with valley views.
Who is it for? Couples and quiet-seekers after a foodie, restful escape with history baked in. It's less suited to families with small children (little beyond the pool and whirlpool to occupy them, though cots are available) or groups wanting a lively scene. Rooms are on one level and spacious for wheelchair users, though not specifically adapted, and the pool is reached via garden steps. Check-in is from 3pm, check-out at 11am.
For travellers building a Sri Lanka itinerary around tea country — Hatton, Dickoya, the Pekoe Trail, Adam's Peak — Uga Halloowella offers an unusually elegant base with rates that bundle food, drink, laundry and tea experiences into one all-inclusive stay.
