Skip the islands for a minute. In the Pindus Mountains of Epirus, northern Greece, Vikos-Aoos National Park offers a completely different Greek holiday: deep river gorges, stone villages, brown bears and hardly anyone else around.
The park takes its name from the two gorges that carve through it — the Vikos Gorge and the Aoös Gorge — and the surrounding terrain is all peaks, plateaus, caves and forest. It sits within the wider Zagori region, famous for its Zagorochoria villages built from local stone, complete with arched stone bridges. That architecture and cultural heritage earned the area UNESCO World Heritage status, so hiking here doubles as a walk through living history.
Trails suit every energy level. The easy Voidomatis Trail runs just under six miles along a river through Ice Age-era woodland. The 7.3-mile Vikos Gorge loop climbs for sweeping views over the river far below. For something tougher, the Vradeto Steps drops 1,046 feet down a stone staircase in just 3.1 miles, and the 7.1-mile Vikos Gorge North to South crossing is rated difficult but delivers the best of the gorge. The park's varied habitat supports roe deer, wolves, lynxes, otters, chamois and brown bears, plus more than 120 bird species and 15 kinds of raptor.
For the classic panorama, head to Oxia, a viewpoint about 3 kilometres south of the village of Monodendri, where you can take in the full scale of the gorge in one look.
This is a park you have to work to reach, which is exactly why it stays peaceful. It's several hours from both Athens and Thessaloniki; the practical route is to fly into Ioánnina National Airport (IOA), about an hour away. Ioannina itself is an attractive lakeside city worth a night or two. Buses run into the region, but a rental car is the smart choice for exploring villages and trailheads on your own schedule.
Entry to the park is free, but there are few support services inside, so carry your own water, food and maps if you're hiking. Timing matters too: April to June and September to October bring comfortable walking weather, avoiding both summer heat and winter snow. If your idea of Greece involves more mountain air than beach bars, this is the trip.
