If you've ever planned a sunset photo around 'golden hour' only to get five minutes of decent light and a wall of cloud, here's some useful science. Travel company Kuoni worked with meteorologist Jim Dale of British Weather Services to rank 165 destinations on what actually makes golden hour great: cloud cover, rainfall, light pollution, artificial brightness, wind speed and how long the sunset lingers. Twenty places made the cut — and deserts rule.
Jordan's Wadi Rum took the top spot, thanks to barely any cloud and almost no rain. Second went to Sossusvlei in Namibia, where zero light pollution and sunsets averaging 27.9 minutes make it arguably the best place on earth to watch the light go. Namibia is the quiet overachiever here, with three entries in the top six: Sossusvlei, Damaraland in third, and Etosha National Park in sixth.
The rest of the top five is a desert fest: Chile's Atacama came fourth — with flamingos, alpacas and Andean foxes as a bonus — and Oman's Wahiba Sands fifth. Botswana's Okavango Delta is seventh, with the US (San Joaquin Valley, Sedona) and Australia (Uluru, the Flinders Ranges) taking two slots each.
For travellers who'd rather not fly long-haul, Greece is the star. Four Greek spots made the top 20 — more than any other country. The Lindos Acropolis on Rhodes landed at number 10, its temple ruins perched 116 metres above the sea for uninterrupted evening light. Paphos in Cyprus followed at 16, then Rhodes Town (17), Cape Sounion near Athens (19) and Zante's Navagio Shipwreck Beach (20). It's a good reminder that Europe can do golden hour properly, without a desert expedition.
Kuoni's Marco Rocha made a point worth stealing: the best golden hour locations aren't always the famous ones. Clear skies and low light pollution matter more than a place's reputation — which is why Victoria Falls (11th), Ras Al Khaimah (12th) and Botswana's Chobe River (13th) beat plenty of better-known sunset spots.
Who's this for? Photographers chasing light, obviously, but also anyone planning a trip around a single great evening. If you want the longest, most reliable sunsets on the planet, the data says book Jordan or Namibia. If you want warm evening light over ancient ruins a short flight from home, Rhodes, Athens, Cyprus and Zante now have the stats to back them up.
