Chase welcome offers are famously fickle — the same card can swing from a modest bonus to a headline-grabbing one within weeks. The Points Guy has crunched the offer history on Chase's most popular cash-back and travel cards to answer a simple question: how good does a sign-up bonus need to be before it's worth applying?
The answer differs by card. On the Chase Sapphire Preferred, the workhorse $95-a-year travel card, the magic number is 75,000 points. That threshold has appeared repeatedly — mid-2024, through most of 2025 and again since July 2026 — but the all-time peak was a 100,000-point bonus, worth roughly $2,050 at TPG's October 2026 valuations, offered briefly in spring 2025 and again in June 2026. Spending requirements have crept up too, from $4,000 in three months to $5,000.
The premium Sapphire Reserve, with its $795 annual fee and lounge access, has dangled a 100,000-point offer since June 2026 (after $6,000 of spending). Meanwhile, the no-annual-fee Freedom Flex is currently at its high-water mark: $250 back after just $500 of spending, up from the $200 it sat at for more than three years. The Freedom Unlimited is more volatile — it cycled between $200, $250 and $300 cash bonuses in 2025 and 2026, and its best-ever offers were structurally different: a full year of double cash back, or $200 plus 5% on groceries worth up to $600 extra.
Two practical caveats from the analysis. First, the benchmarks are for public offers — targeted deals can be richer, and some offers listed may already be gone. Second, eligibility rules matter: Chase limits how many new cards you can be approved for in a short window, and you may be barred from a bonus if you've held the same card recently. Check the terms before you apply.
Why it matters: for travellers who fund trips partly through points and miles, timing an application around these thresholds is free money. A 75,000-point Sapphire Preferred bonus is worth over $1,500 in TPG's valuations — enough for long-haul flights or a week of hotel nights — versus $1,230 at the 60,000-point baseline. Waiting for the right offer, rather than applying on a whim, can add hundreds of dollars of travel value to the same spending.
The takeaway benchmarks: hold out for at least 75,000 points on the Sapphire Preferred, $200-plus on the Freedom Flex (ideally the current $250), double cash back or a $200-plus-groceries combo on the Freedom Unlimited, and don't hesitate at 100,000 points on the Sapphire Reserve.
