Most drivers hammer down Interstate 40 between Memphis and Little Rock without a second thought. But about an hour west of Memphis sits Wynne, Arkansas — a small town billed as "The City with a Smile" that makes a genuinely good base for outdoor time in the Arkansas Delta.
Wynne's setting is its selling point. The town straddles the line between the flat, fertile Delta lowlands and Crowley's Ridge, a narrow band of hills built from windblown soil and cut by shifting rivers over thousands of years. That ridge supports hickory, oak, beech and water maple forest that feels nothing like the farm fields around it.
The main draw is Village Creek State Park, a 7,000-acre spread up on the ridge and one of the largest state parks in Arkansas. Its two manmade lakes, Lake Dunn and Lake Austell, are popular with anglers chasing bass, crappie and catfish — record fish here include a 16-plus-pound largemouth and a catfish around 30 pounds. There's a dock and boat launch for small craft, though gas motors are banned; anglers who need them can drive 45 minutes to Mississippi River State Park instead. Paddlers can skip bringing gear entirely thanks to a self-serve kayak kiosk at Lake Dunn, and families get a sandy swimming beach and playgrounds.
Hikers have more than 30 miles of trail to choose from, ranging from a quarter-mile Arboretum Trail to the 2.77-mile Lake Dunn route. The most historically weighty path is the Military Road Trail, a now-sunken forest track once used during the forced removal of Native Americans on the Trail of Tears. Mountain bikers and horse riders get their own routes (closed when wet, as the ridge soil is fragile), and there's also a 27-hole golf course, campgrounds, and scheduled events like guided nature walks and painting classes.
Food-wise, Wynne does classic Southern and American comfort eating well. Tacker's Shake Shack serves burger baskets with root beer floats and peanut butter banana shakes; Mama B's Diner (recently renamed from Johnson's Fish House under new ownership by two longtime staff) plates catfish, country fried steak and fried fruit pies; and Nutrish by NQ covers the healthy end with smoothies, salads and cold-pressed juices. Jones Bar-B-Q Diner, an award-winning barbecue spot in the Delta town of Marianna, is 40 minutes away.
The town has had a rough run — I-40 bypassed it, the railroad left, and a 2023 tornado caused serious damage — but there's visible reinvestment in landscaped streets, gathering spaces and new pickleball courts. Wynne is also a stop on the 249-mile Crowley's Ridge Gravel Trail cycling route that runs the length of the state.
Lodging is the main limitation: a couple of motels and one two-star hotel in town, so consider a cabin in Village Creek State Park, or use Memphis as your base and visit on a day trip — the Peabody and its famous duck parade are within easy reach.
It's a story aimed at road-trippers, anglers, campers and cyclists who like their stops under-the-radar and friendly rather than polished.
