Cape Town gets its annual hit of Belgian culture this November, when A Taste of Belgium returns to Newlands for its 15th edition. The free, one-day festival takes place on Saturday, 14 November 2026 from 10:00 to 17:00 at the Belgian Residence on Boshof Avenue, and it has quietly become a fixture of the city's events calendar.
The event started in 2014 as a small gathering for Belgians living far from home, organised by the Belgian Chamber of Commerce in South Africa together with the Consulate General of Belgium in Cape Town. Fifteen editions later, it's a full-blown cultural exchange that draws locals, expats and curious visitors in equal numbers. Consul General Nicolas Fierens Gevaert describes it as a tradition that strengthens ties between Belgium, South Africa and Cape Town itself.
Expect the classics, but plenty beyond them too. Food is the main draw: traditional Belgian dishes, waffles made fresh on site, gourmet frites and wine tastings, plus an open-air beer garden pouring speciality brews. The theme for 2026 is 'Belgium. More than you think', and the programme backs that up with live music, interactive cultural displays and family-friendly activities. A Smurf Cosplay appearance is also on the bill — a nod to one of Belgium's most famous comic-book exports.
There's a shopping angle as well. Stalls from local Belgian businesses, entrepreneurs and craft vendors give visitors a chance to see what the Belgian community contributes to Cape Town's economy, and to support independent artisans while they're at it. Sponsors for this edition include Lotus Biscoff, Duvel and KLM, alongside Belgium's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and several South African partners.
Practicalities are straightforward. Entry is free, with designated off-site parking and complimentary regular shuttles running to the venue, so there's no need to circle Newlands streets looking for a spot. Organisers just ask attendees to drink responsibly — easier said than done with Duvel on tap.
For anyone planning a Cape Town trip in mid-November, this is a low-cost way to add something different to a day that might otherwise be all vineyards and Table Mountain. It's a single day, it's free, and it sits in a leafy suburb within easy reach of the city bowl, so it slots neatly into a longer itinerary. Come hungry, arrive early for the waffles, and let the shuttle handle the rest.
