Puerto Cisnes, a small port town in Chile's Aysén Province, is about to log a first: in mid-November it welcomes the Silver Cloud, a luxury expedition ship operated by Silversea, for the very first cruise call in the port's history.

The regional port operator, Empresa Portuaria Chacabuco (Emporcha), says the milestone caps off nearly ten years of groundwork. The town's infrastructure was originally built for regional ferries and domestic coastal services, not international cruise traffic, so getting a high-end expedition vessel to dock here required patience, investment and a reputation for reliable local management — something Emporcha's president Eduardo Vera Wandersleben credited directly for the win.

The ship will berth at the Puerto Cisnes Connectivity Terminal, a purpose-upgraded facility with a floating dock and more than 500 square metres of passenger space. Mayor Francisco Roncagliolo Leporati says the terminal was designed from the start with cruise ships in mind, and locals hope calls will funnel money into shops, crafts and services in a town that has long been off the main Patagonia cruising corridor.

The visit itself is no fly-by. The Silver Cloud — which carries just 260 passengers — arrives as part of a 20-day sailing from Valparaíso to Puerto Williams, touching three countries and 15 ports in total. The itinerary takes in Puerto Montt, Tortel and Punta Arenas in Chile, plus Ushuaia on the Argentine side of Tierra del Fuego. It also opens Silversea's 2026-27 Antarctica season, with expedition days on the White Continent and scenic cruising through the Chilean fjords before finishing in Puerto Williams.

Why it matters: Aysén is one of the least developed corners of Chilean Patagonia — think glaciers, temperate rainforest and far fewer visitors than the Torres del Paine circuit. A new cruise gateway at Puerto Cisnes makes this stretch of wilderness realistically accessible for the first time, and signals that small-ship expedition lines are pushing beyond the well-worn Punta Arenas–Ushuaia route. If you like the idea of Patagonia before the crowds find it, itineraries calling here are worth a look.
