Abu Dhabi's November calendar is stacking up nicely, with the first weekend of the month offering everything from world-class sport to hands-on art — much of it free or close to it. Here's what's on between Friday 6 and Sunday 8 November.

Sport fans get a strong draw at Yas Links on Yas Island, where the Abu Dhabi Championship tees off. General admission is free on Friday 6 November, so you can follow the pros around the links course without spending a dirham, then wander into the tournament village for food and entertainment. Weekend tickets start at Dhs100 if you'd rather catch Saturday or Sunday action.

Culture hunters have two standout options. At the Cultural Foundation, The RAGE is a free six-day exhibition (running until 8 November, 5pm to midnight) devoted entirely to 90s Abu Dhabi — think Action Zone arcades, throwback fashion, 20 retail brands, 20 F&B vendors, classic arcade games and live performances in a dedicated amphitheatre. Free shuttles run from the ADIA public parking lot. Over at Umm Al Emarat Park, the Children's Biennale explores the theme 'How the World Feels' through eight interactive installations built around touch, sound, movement and light, with artist-led workshops in drawing, weaving and lantern-making on 6 and 7 November. Park entry is just Dhs10.

One for the record books: Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi has unveiled the largest LEGO brick model of a prehistoric mammal ever built — a Stegotetrabelodon emiratus, the four-tusked elephant that once roamed this part of the Arabian Peninsula. It took 748,000 bricks, 585 hours and help from 17,000 visitors, and you can see it as part of the LEGO SHOWS Natural Brickstory exhibition. Tickets from Dhs70, open daily until 8.30pm on weekends through 8 November.

If you'd rather make something yourself, there's plenty. Manarat Al Saadiyat runs a crochet jewellery workshop on Saturday from 12pm to 3pm (Dhs100, all levels welcome), while 421 at Mina Zayed hosts Tiles as Topography, a two-day ceramic intensive with artist Parneet Pahwa on 7 and 8 November (Dhs60) covering carving, relief and sgraffito techniques.

Evenings are covered too. Lock, Stock & Barrel hosts its free Risky Quizness quiz every Friday at 8pm with up to Dhs3,000 in prizes — arrive before 8pm to catch happy hour prices. Dancers can hit the Ritmos Latin social at Up and Below Rooftop on Fridays from 10pm to 2am, free entry, salsa and bachata until late.

Food-wise, Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental has launched a Broadway Saturday Brunch (12.30pm to 4pm) with American-inspired plates like truffle Croque Monsieur, beef tartare and a chocolate chip lava cookie, priced from Dhs295 soft drinks to Dhs495 with Champagne. And on Sunday, kids aged three and up can take the stage at the free Kids & Family Jam at CRAFT by Side Hustle in the Rosewood Hotel, 12pm to 4pm — just register in advance.

The takeaway: this is a good weekend to be in Abu Dhabi without a big budget. Most of the headline events — golf on Friday, the 90s exhibition, the quiz night, the kids' jam and the Latin social — cost nothing, and the paid options rarely top Dhs300. Perfect if you're already in the UAE and fancy a low-effort city break.
