Families pooling miles for flights with children just got a real break from Alaska Airlines. Its free Atmos Rewards loyalty programme has launched four new "communities" - opt-in benefit groups any member can join - and two of them are genuinely useful: one gives points back on award tickets for kids, the other turns credit card point transfers into elite status progress.
Families on the Go is the headline act. Choose it, and you get 20% of your points rebated on eligible award tickets for children aged 12 and under. It applies to Alaska, Hawaiian and partner airline awards (no cabin restriction mentioned), allows up to seven kids on one reservation, and has no annual cap. The mechanics: you pay the full points price at booking, then the rebate lands in your account within about 24 hours of flying. Taxes and fees aren't refunded, and the redeeming adult must be enrolled in the community when travel happens. Example maths: two kids' awards at 100,000 points each come back with 40,000 points, so the family nets a 10% saving across a family of four travelling on identical awards. Existing bookings can qualify too.
Global Locals targets points enthusiasts. For every 25 base Atmos points transferred in from eligible partners - currently Bilt Rewards (1:1) and Marriott Bonvoy (3:1, with a 5,000-point bonus on 60,000-point transfers) - you earn one elite status point, with no cap. That makes buying status outright expensive (Platinum would take two million Bilt points), but it's a tidy way to top off an account instead of squeezing in a December mileage run. The community also adds a 10% status point bonus on flights starting or ending outside the US, including partner and award travel.
The clever bit is combining the two. The Atmos Rewards Summit Visa Infinite card includes free points sharing between up to 10 linked members. So one adult joins Global Locals, transfers Bilt points and keeps the status credit; the other joins Families on the Go, receives the shared points, books the kids' awards and pockets the rebate - all from a single 200,000-point transfer. One caveat: keep the Summit cardholder as the booker, since the card's partner award booking fee waiver only applies from their own account.
The other new communities, Culinary Journeys and Active Escapes, offer food and outdoor travel perks plus an AllTrails discount. They sit alongside the existing Alaska resident (Club 49 - free checked bags) and Hawaii resident (Huaka'i - free neighbor island bags and discounts) programmes. Each community also runs a destination challenge through the end of 2027 worth up to 10,000 redeemable and 10,000 status points for visiting 10 listed places, with a 100,000-point prize for the first finisher in each group. You can switch communities once per calendar year, keeping your points but not your challenge progress.
Worth a look if you're a parent booking award travel on Alaska or its partners, or a points collector who'd rather transfer than fly for status.
