Most airline companion tickets come wrapped in so much fine print they're barely usable. The one tied to Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines' Atmos Rewards credit cards is a rare exception — the second passenger earns points, can be upgraded, and doesn't even have to be the cardholder.
Here's how it works. Two cards offer the perk: the Atmos Rewards Ascent Visa Signature (personal) and the Atmos Rewards Visa Signature Business. Both include a $99 companion fare — plus taxes and fees from $23 — in the welcome bonus. The Ascent is currently offering up to 80,000 points plus the companion fare (60,000 points after $3,000 spend in 90 days, another 20,000 at $5,000 total), while the business card offers 70,000 points plus the fare after $4,000 spend. On top of that, spending $6,000 in an anniversary year earns you another certificate.
The certificates are valid on Alaska and Hawaiian flights within the Americas, including Hawaii — but not to Europe or Pacific destinations outside the US. They apply to economy tickets only, though every economy fare class qualifies, and you'll need exactly two travellers on one roundtrip or one-way itinerary. No stopovers or multi-city trips anymore, and no combining with award travel. You have one year from issue to book, but can travel later.
The flexibility is where this perk earns its keep. You can hand the code to two friends or family members entirely — the cardholder doesn't need to fly, though the ticket must be paid with the issuing card. Both passengers earn redeemable points, and both are eligible for upgrades, from complimentary elite upgrades clearing 72-120 hours before departure to confirmed upgrade certificates. A nice hack: Atmos Rewards runs a 90-day status match challenge, and flying on a companion fare ticket counts toward it, so you can activate status right before you travel.
Booking happens through the Wallet section of your Atmos Rewards account. Eligible fares show a green checkmark, with the companion price listed alongside. In one example, a Fort Lauderdale to Honolulu roundtrip cost $748 total — $570.49 for the first passenger and $176.53 for the companion, a saving of nearly $394. On peak-date fares approaching $1,000, the discount is even more meaningful.
For families, the maths stacks up quickly. You can hold both the personal and business card, and a couple could each hold one, putting two certificates behind a four-person trip. Given the low annual fees, the certificates alone can justify the cards for anyone who regularly flies Alaska or Hawaiian — particularly to Hawaii or Central America, the longest (and priciest) routes the fare covers.
The main frustrations are minor but worth knowing: Alaska wallet credits can't be applied to these bookings, and the fare is now restricted to simple point-to-point or roundtrip itineraries. Still, in most markets you'll come out ahead — just make sure you use the certificate before its book-by date.
One caveat: this is separate from the Global Companion Awards on the Atmos Rewards Summit Visa Infinite, which apply to award redemptions rather than cash fares.
