Two quiet but genuinely useful upgrades are coming to the American Airlines mobile app, and both fix small daily annoyances that frequent flyers know well.
The first is automatic seat changes. Solo AAdvantage travellers will be able to set a seat preference — aisle, window, or even just something nearer the front or a bulkhead — and the app will move them automatically when a matching seat opens up. No more obsessively refreshing the seat map in the days before a flight.
There are rules worth knowing. Moves stay within your existing cabin and cost nothing extra, but exit rows are excluded, and the feature switches off once you're moved, once you change your seat manually, or 24 hours before departure. Requests are prioritised by status level, then by when you signed up. That last cutoff matters: seats often free up in the final hours as upgrades clear and passengers shift flights, so you'll still want to check the map yourself close to take-off. Gold members especially should note that their complimentary Main Cabin Extra access only begins within that same 24-hour window — right when the automation stops.
American is following United here, which launched a similar feature in March 2024 and reported by that July that over 30% of customers who saved a preference ended up moved into it. It works, and it's catching on.
The second change is for the very top of the loyalty ladder. Executive Platinum and ConciergeKey members flying in economy will be able to pre-order their complimentary snack — the buy-on-board item they already get free on flights over 1,100 miles — with a deadline of 20 hours before departure. Anyone who's watched the snack cart run out before reaching their row will see the appeal. When your upgrade doesn't clear, at least dinner is guaranteed.
Why it matters: these are small features, but they're the kind that shape whether an airline feels like it's on your side. An aisle seat instead of a middle can transform a five-hour flight, and a free snack you can actually count on beats one you have to hope for. For anyone holding AAdvantage status, it's worth switching the seat-watch feature on for your next booking — just remember to re-enable it if you make a manual seat change, and give the map one last look inside the final 24 hours. All other coach passengers will be hoping American goes a step further and restores general pre-ordering of buy-on-board meals, an option it trialled before the pandemic and one that rival Alaska still offers today.
