Deep Creek Lake gets the crowds in Garrett County, Maryland. Twenty-something miles away, hidden inside Savage River State Forest, Big Run State Park does things differently: no running water, no cell service, and some of the best stargazing silence in western Maryland.
The park sits along the Savage River Reservoir, with Monroe Run and Big Run streams cutting through hills of oak and hickory. If you'd rather fish from the water than the shore, there's one boat ramp — and it's electric and rowboats only. It's also forgiving on timing, since camping runs through winter. Just note it's a back-to-basics trip: stock up beforehand in the small town of Accident, about 30 minutes away, which has a few markets and grocery stores for supplies.
