Calgary has a new way to mark Halloween season this year, and it skips both the jump scares of a haunted house and the muddy pumpkin patch route. The Nightmare Bar, a timed ticketed pop-up, is taking over Limerick's Traditional Public House on Macleod Trail in southwest Calgary for a limited run on select evenings from Thursday, Oct. 8 through Saturday, Oct. 31.

Here's how it works: you book one of three nightly sessions — 5 p.m., 7 p.m. or 9 p.m. — and get 90 minutes inside a pub transformed with Halloween decor, seasonal music and photo-op setups. The session includes games and challenges with prizes up for grabs, plus a themed drinks menu. Your ticket covers one complimentary welcome drink; food and further drinks are extra.

Costumes are actively encouraged, which is half the fun — but there are rules. Skip realistic weapons and dangerous props, and make sure your costume doesn't fully hide who you are. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID, because it's strictly an 18+ event.

On pricing: early bird tickets start at $15 plus fees, with a VIP upgrade at an extra $9.99 that guarantees you a seat — worth knowing, since general admission seating is first come, first served and not guaranteed. If queues put you off, a Queue Jump add-on costs $6.90 plus fees. Note that tickets are non-refundable, though rescheduling may be possible for an extra fee depending on availability.

Practicalities are simple. The venue is Limerick's at 7304 Macleod Trail SW, with free parking behind the restaurant — though if you're drinking, plan a safe ride home rather than relying on the car.

For travellers passing through Calgary in October, this is an easy, low-stakes evening plan: cheap, brief, and much more social than wandering a haunted attraction alone. It also works for a group night out — just book VIP if having a table together matters, and move fast, since the whole thing disappears after Halloween.
