A Cancun public transit bus went up in flames on one of the city's busiest streets Sunday night, but the story ends better than it could have: the driver and all passengers escaped without injury.

The Cancun Fire Department says the blaze started around 9:00 p.m. in the engine compartment while the bus was travelling in the side lane of Tulum Avenue, a main north-south artery that runs through the heart of the hotel-zone-adjacent city. The driver noticed the fire, pulled over and got everyone off before the flames took hold. By the time crews arrived — called out after multiple reports from the public — the vehicle was fully alight in front of the new City Theater.

Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze, but the bus was a total loss. Authorities are now investigating the official cause.

Why does this matter to visitors? Cancun's city buses are the workhorses of local transport — cheap, frequent and the way most travellers who aren't splashing out on taxis get between downtown and the hotel zone. Mechanical fires are rare, but it's a useful reminder of the basics: know where the exits are, and don't hesitate to move quickly if a driver pulls over unexpectedly. In this case, the driver's fast reaction is exactly why everyone walked away.

If you were planning to rely on buses during a Cancun trip, there's no need to change plans. The network kept operating, and incidents like this are uncommon along the main corridors. Just keep small change handy for fares, and if you'd rather avoid the crowd at night, taxis and ride apps are widely available around Tulum Avenue and the downtown district.
