Booking a driver's licence test in Cape Town is a postcode lottery, according to new figures from the City of Cape Town. Wait times for a light motor vehicle test swing from a single day at some centres to more than three months at others, and the city has now published the numbers centre by centre.

The standout contrast: Lingelethu West and Joe Gqabi are listing next-day appointments for light motor vehicle tests, while New Ottery is showing a 94-day wait. Parow (72 days) and Goodwood (63 days) aren't much better. Across the 18 listed testing centres, the average wait for a standard car licence comes to 31 days.

Learner's licence applicants face an even rougher ride overall. The average wait there is 44 days, with Kuils River the worst offender at a daunting 110 days. The flip side: New Ottery — the slowest spot for practical tests — offers learner's licence slots in just four days, proof that the 'best' centre depends entirely on which test you need.

Elsewhere on the practical test list, Atlantis sits at 58 days, Gallows Hill at 42, Elsies River at 35 and Brackenfell at 32, while Milnerton (8 days), Kuils River (9) and Eastridge (7) are among the quicker options. Fish Hoek (12) and Hillstar (15) are reasonable bets for the southern suburbs and False Bay side of the metro.

The City acknowledges the delays but points to a familiar culprit: no-shows. In a statement, it said backlogs can't always be avoided, 'often due to people not arriving to take their tests'. Every wasted slot pushes the queue back for everyone else — so if you book, show up or cancel properly.

So who should care? Mostly locals and anyone relocating to Cape Town or staying long-term — think remote workers, students or expats who need a South African licence rather than relying on an international driving permit. If you fall into that camp, the practical takeaway is simple: don't just book at your nearest centre. Check the published wait lists first, and consider travelling across town to a quieter testing centre if it saves you three months. The figures also cover heavy motor vehicle and motorcycle tests, so the same comparison applies if you're after a bike or commercial licence.

For short-stay visitors, nothing changes — an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence remains the way to legally hire a car in South Africa. But for anyone settling into life in the Mother City, these numbers are the difference between being on the road next week or next season.
