Marriott's luxury lifestyle brand EDITION has finally landed in Africa, and it picked a high-profile spot to do it: Quay 7 at Cape Town's V&A Waterfront. The Cape Town EDITION is scheduled to open in October 2026, marking the brand's first property on the continent.
The numbers suggest the timing is right. The Waterfront pulled in 27 million visitors during Growthpoint's 2026 financial year — Growthpoint Properties holds a 50% stake in the precinct — and average daily room rates across its hotel portfolio climbed 10.2% year on year. Cape Town's luxury end is clearly not struggling for demand.
Inside, the hotel will have 142 rooms, including 27 suites, with sightlines towards the harbour and three of the city's most recognisable landmarks: Table Mountain, Lion's Head and Signal Hill. The amenity list is what you'd expect at this level — a signature spa, rooftop pool, restaurants and social spaces, plus event and private-function facilities. Six ultra-luxury branded residences, ranging from roughly 354 to 524 square metres, are part of the wider development, aiming squarely at the top of Cape Town's property market.
The building itself has already caused a stir before welcoming a single guest. Construction images divided opinion online, with critics calling the bold, concrete-heavy exterior overly Brutalist and defenders arguing it should be judged in the flesh. The design comes from Shanghai-based Neri & Hu working with Cape Town's StudioMAS, and the interiors are expected to soften things with local materials, artisanal details and Cape design influences.
Why does this matter for travellers? The EDITION brand typically blends design-led styling with a social, hotel-bar-and-restaurant energy rather than old-school formal luxury, so its arrival adds a genuinely new flavour to a waterfront already dense with well-known hotels. Staying at Quay 7 puts you within walking distance of the harbour, the Watershed market,Robben Island ferries and the restaurants around the clock tower — and the rooms face some of the best mountain views in the city. Book early if you want an opening-year stay; new flagship properties in high-demand precincts tend to fill fast.
