Citi has quietly added Japan Airlines Mileage Bank to its list of Thank You Points transfer partners, joining Bilt, Rove and Capital One. To mark the launch, there's a 30% transfer bonus running through October 24: 1,000 Citi points from annual-fee cards become 1,300 JAL miles (no-annual-fee cards get 1,000 to 910 instead of the usual 1,000 to 700). That math is what pushes a roundtrip business class ticket to Europe down to roughly 66,000 Citi points — a genuinely strong price for a lie-flat seat across the Atlantic.
What makes JAL miles interesting isn't just the bonus. Even though Japan Airlines is an oneworld member, its programme prices awards very differently from American AAdvantage, so it adds real options rather than duplicating what Citi members already had. Three standouts:
First, Air France business class across the Atlantic. Booking through JAL can cost fewer miles than going direct through Air France's own Flying Blue programme, and — more importantly — the taxes and fees are far lower, saving a couple hundred dollars each way.
Second, JAL's own flights sometimes have extra award space for its own members, though the programme notes this has tightened since it started partnering with US credit card programmes.
Third, and arguably the best trick: JAL prices roundtrips by adding up the total flown distance and pricing it off a single chart, so the return leg often costs far less than double. Examples: American's Miami–Madrid is 60,000 miles one-way but 85,000 roundtrip — effectively 42,500 each way. Emirates business class from New York to Milan or Newark to Athens is the same, 85,000 roundtrip with only about $250 in taxes and fees, a fraction of what Emirates charges its own members. LATAM Miami–Buenos Aires follows the same pattern, and a Miami–Lima roundtrip in LATAM business drops to just 60,000 miles total.
Two catches worth knowing: these rates only apply to single-partner awards (every segment must be on the same airline partner, and partner inventory doesn't always match what other oneworld sites show), and JAL miles expire after just 36 months, so don't stockpile. Awards are also limited to the member and eligible family members.
If you're holding Citi points, the current card offers make this an easy play — the Strata Premier comes with 60,000 bonus points after $4,000 of spend in three months, and the Strata Elite offers 75,000 after $6,000. Either gets you most of the way to that European business class roundtrip.
For anyone sitting on a Thank You Points balance and eyeing a premium cabin trip to Europe or South America, this is one of the better redemption routes to appear this year — and the 30% bonus gives it a deadline.
