Downwind sailing is the part of a passage most sailors dream about – tradewind runs, effortless 200-mile days, a cruising chute up on a Sunday afternoon. But it's also where the most serious accidents happen, and sailor and instructor Nikki Henderson has written a thorough guide on how to enjoy the run without joining the statistics.
The reality check came in the 2024 Rolex Sydney Hobart Race, where two crash gybes proved fatal on separate boats, and a crew member was rescued overboard on a third. Those incidents prompted Henderson to lay out where things go wrong and, crucially, what crews can do about it.
The biggest threat is the accidental crash gybe: boom, mainsheet and vang sweeping across the boat with huge force. Worse, trouble rarely arrives alone – a crash gybe can trigger a broach, gear failure can put someone in the water, and a panicked man-overboard recovery can cause another gybe. Almost every serious downwind incident is a chain of small problems compounding.
The helmsperson – human or autopilot – is usually at the centre. Double the wind and steering gets four times harder, not twice. Henderson advises watching the water rather than staring at instruments, matching helm experience to conditions, rotating drivers regularly, and having a second person shadow the helm. Watch for warning signs in yourself and others: rigid posture, eyes fixed on the compass, disconnection from the boat's motion.
People matter as much as technique. Fatigue, hunger, dehydration and fear all degrade performance, and fear is contagious – a panicking crew member can't follow instructions. Her fix is unglamorous: mandatory food and water within reach, proper sleep, rotating roles before performance slips, and asking each crew for an energy score out of ten at every watch change.
Positioning is the other lifesaver. Many injuries come from being in the wrong place, not from the mistake itself. Move around the boat in a braced 'sumo' stance, feet athwartships, one hand always on something solid, never under the spinnaker pole, and mark out the mainsheet's danger arc on deck so nobody stands in it.
Sail choice changes the risk maths too. An asymmetric spinnaker gives roughly 40 degrees of TWA margin between collapse and broach, plus another 20 degrees before a crash gybe – forgiving by design. A symmetric kite or, worst of all, a poled-out headsail leaves the helmsperson on a tightrope with essentially no margin and, in the headsail's case, no warning before the gybe.
Finally, incidents cluster at moments of change: gybes, sail changes, watch handovers, helm swaps. Assume a manoeuvre isn't finished until ten minutes after it happened, keep watch changes overlapping, and don't swap helms as a squall approaches. And build a culture where a handful of non-negotiable rules – clipping on at night, no chat while driving, staying clear of danger zones – are enforced every time, not just when it's blowing hard. Rules ignored in moderate weather quietly become optional.
