Skip the big-name Oregon stops for a weekend and point the car at Dallas, a town of roughly 15,000 people in Polk County, about 30 minutes from Salem and the Salem-Willamette Valley Airport. It sits on the edge of the Willamette Valley — the 120-mile stretch between the Coast and Cascade ranges better known as Oregon Wine Country — and packs a surprising amount into a small footprint: a historic downtown, a cluster of family-run wineries, and easy trails through wetlands teeming with birds.

Downtown Dallas is the kind of main street built for slow browsing. The Main Street Emporium sells vintage finds, locally made goods and decor, while The Shabby Barn covers similar ground. Fabric fans head to Grandma's Attic Sewing Emporium, and there's a gloriously odd shop called Everything Blaine Likes and Nothing Else for comics, vinyl and retro toys. The Fox Theatre and the Polk County Museum round out the town's stops.

Then there's the wine. Namasté Vineyards pours Chardonnay, Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Noir from a converted century-old barn with wide views over the valley, plus charcuterie boards to keep you anchored. Van Duzer Vineyards offers guided tasting flights of its releases — the Pinot Noirs are the draw — with both indoor tasting room and patio seating.

Nature is woven right into town. Dallas City Park spans 35 acres with paved and mulched trails along Rickreall Creek, a swimming hole, a Japanese garden, an arboretum, a disc golf course and enough ground that one visit won't cover it. Just outside town, Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge has about four miles of easy trails, a viewing kiosk and open sights of Morgan Lake, Canada geese, coyotes and a long list of birds — autumn is especially good for spotting wildlife once the leaves drop.

For travellers, the appeal is obvious: you get the Willamette Valley wine experience and proper Pacific Northwest greenery without the crowds or the price tag of Portland-adjacent hotspots. It works as a day trip from Salem or as a relaxed base for a longer wine-country loop — and the coast, with its string of quiet beaches, is a scenic drive away when you're done.
