Everyone heads to Sausalito or Mill Valley when they cross the Golden Gate, but the biggest city in Marin County might be its most interesting. San Rafael, tucked into sheltered hills at the northern edge of San Francisco Bay, has a walkable downtown, a Gold Rush-era state park, Frank Lloyd Wright architecture and — rare for the fog-prone Bay Area — actual reliable sunshine.
The geography does the trick: hills screen out the wind and marine fog, making San Rafael the sunniest spot in Marin. It also has one of the region's few protected sandy swim beaches, McNear's Beach Park, complete with a public pool, pickleball courts and big bay views.
Downtown packs in a surprising slice of California history. The pink Mission San Rafael Arcángel dates to 1817; ten minutes away, China Camp State Park preserves a Chinese fishing village from Gold Rush times, with shady hiking and biking trails along the shore. Architecture fans can ogle the Wright-designed Marin Civic Center or hunt mid-century homes in the Terra Linda and Lucas Valley neighborhoods — you can even rent a classic Eichler for a stay.
Fourth Street is the main drag for shopping and eating. Highlights include Rebound Bookstore, a secondhand shop with distinctly hippie-era Marin energy, and Autistry Studios, a maker space selling handmade goods crafted by autistic adults. Families will appreciate Fox & Kit Coffee Haus + Playground, which pairs craft coffee and pastries with genuinely imaginative play areas. For dinner, locals will send you to Sol Food, a Puerto Rican institution so beloved that Bad Bunny brought his 80-person tour crew here in 2022 for the mofongo. A bottle of their vinegar-based Pique hot sauce is the souvenir to grab.
Sundays bring the Marin Farmers Market to the hilltop Civic Center — around 150 vendors selling produce, seafood, baked goods and crafts, widely considered the best market in Northern California. From May through November, the Hispanic Canal District stages its own Little Marketplace on the last Sunday of the month, with food trucks and artisan stalls.
Sleep options skew characterful. The 13-room Panama Hotel in Gerstle Park occupies a 1920s boarding house with themed rooms, shared bathrooms in some cases and a hostel-like charm one reviewer called perfect for poets. For something sleeker, the downtown AC Hotel has a rooftop bar with fire pits and views of Mount Tamalpais. Campers can pitch tents at China Camp — all sites are hike-in, so no generator noise — while RVs park in a lot outside the campground.
Getting there is easy: about an hour's drive from San Francisco International, or a 70-minute Marin AirPorter shuttle ride. From San Francisco itself, take the ferry to Larkspur and hop the SMART rail line 15 minutes into town. Since SMART runs north through wine country, San Rafael makes a natural first stop on a Sonoma or Napa trip. Travellers after sun, good food and a low-key local scene — rather than postcard crowds — will find it here.
