Delta restored the only nonstop link between New England and Hawaii in February 2026, then quietly dismantled most of it by late August. The Boston to Honolulu route, the longest domestic flight in the US at 5,095 miles, was originally scheduled from December 19, 2026 through April 25, 2027 on a 282-seat Airbus A330-300. Now just 17 days of flying survive: the first departure leaves Boston on December 19 and the last on January 3, with everything after the holidays cancelled and no return planned for winter 2027/28.

It is the third exit from this market in three years. Hawaiian Airlines launched the route in April 2019 (the inaugural carried nearly 1.5 tons of live lobster in the hold) and dropped it in November 2025. Delta tried it from November 2024, suspended it after one season, then brought it back — and cut it again.

The math is brutal. A westbound flight takes about 11 hours, with the return around 9 hours 40 minutes, so one round trip eats most of an aircraft's day. A 282-seat widebody needs to fill premium cabins at genuine premium fares, and government data shows only about 410 local passengers fly the city pair each day in each direction — roughly 149,800 round-trip travellers a year. That is thin traffic for two widebodies, especially after Delta's entry pushed fares down.

The contrast with New York tells the story. JFK to Honolulu supports daily widebody service from both Delta and Hawaiian on a route about 100 miles shorter. New York's metro population is roughly triple Boston's, and its deeper pool of corporate and high-income leisure travellers can actually fill lie-flat Delta One seats on a 10-hour flight. In the same announcement that revived Boston, Delta made JFK-Honolulu daily from April 2026.

Delta isn't abandoning Hawaii — quite the opposite. Detroit-Honolulu went daily, Atlanta gained a second Honolulu frequency for winter, JFK was increased, and both Salt Lake City and Los Angeles got new or upgraded Kona service. The common thread: those routes start at Delta hubs where connecting traffic helps fill the plane. Boston relies almost entirely on local demand. And the A330-300 has better things to do — days after the Boston service ends, the same aircraft type flies Paris to Las Vegas for CES, an even longer sector with a clear revenue reason behind it.

For travellers, the practical takeaway: if you had a January 2027 Boston-Honolulu booking, Delta is rebooking affected passengers onto connections, reportedly via Los Angeles and Detroit. The only year-round ways to fly nonstop to Hawaii from the East Coast now run through the New York area — Delta and Hawaiian from JFK, United from Newark — while Boston travellers will need to connect, likely through Seattle under Hawaiian's new Alaska Air Group plan.
