A familiar beachfront resort on Malaysia's east coast is getting a new identity. Jin Jiang Hotels (Malaysia) has signed a management agreement with Techvance Hotel & Resort to rebrand the Sand & Sandals Desaru Beach Resort & Spa as Renjoy Hotel Desaru, marking the first appearance of the RENJOY HOTEL brand anywhere in Southeast Asia.

The property sits in Desaru, a beach strip in Johor that has become one of Malaysia's fastest-growing leisure corners. Under the deal, the resort will be gradually refreshed with updated guest rooms, new dining options and upgraded facilities, though the owners stress the laid-back beachfront character will stay intact. RENJOY positions itself in the upper-midscale segment with a design-led approach: instead of a standardised template, each hotel is meant to reflect its local surroundings and culture.

The timing is no accident. Malaysia logged 42.2 million international visitor arrivals in 2025 (including same-day visitors), up 11.2% year on year, with China alone sending roughly 4.7 million travellers — a 25.1% jump. Johor welcomed 10.63 million overnight tourists in 2025, and the state's hotel room count grew 9.4% to nearly 35,000 rooms. The state government is now pushing for 12 million tourists under its Visit Johor Year 2026 campaign, so new branded rooms arriving on the coast fit the mood neatly.

For Jin Jiang — China's largest hotel group and the world's second-largest by room count, with more than 14,400 hotels across over 50 countries — the Desaru conversion is part of a wider Malaysian push. A 7 Days Premium Hotel at Tanjung Malim is also lined up, expected in the first half of 2027.

Why should travellers care? If you've stayed at Sand & Sandals before, expect a gradual facelift rather than a closure-and-rebuild: the resort keeps trading while the transformation rolls out. And if you're heading to Desaru anyway — increasingly popular with Singaporean weekenders and, thanks to improved connectivity, Chinese group tours — you'll soon have another internationally backed mid-market option on the sand, backed by Jin Jiang's reservation platform and loyalty ecosystem. Anyone planning a Johor trip in 2026 will also be travelling during the state's big tourism push, which typically brings events, promotions and better deals.
