If you've ever missed an airline retiming because you forgot to set a tracker for one leg of a trip, ExpertFlyer has quietly fixed the problem. The flight-monitoring platform, long a favourite of frequent flyers, now lets Premium and Elite members create their full set of alerts simply by forwarding an airline confirmation email.
Traditionally, ExpertFlyer users would manually build three alerts per flight: a flight alert (which flags when a flight is zeroed out from the schedule - often a sign it will be cancelled - or when award or upgrade space opens in a fare class), a schedule alert (which pings you if the airline retimes the flight, giving you a chance to request a rebook before the airline assigns you one), and an aircraft change alert (useful if a swap means your seat no longer exists). The new automated alerts feature bundles all three into a one-time setup. Save your preferences, forward confirmations to createalerts@expertflyer.com from your registered email, and alerts are created for every segment of the itinerary. Keen travellers can even set their email client to auto-forward confirmations so nothing requires manual effort at all.
The bigger news for many will be disruption alerts, now in public beta for Premium and Elite members. When the system detects a cancellation, delay or schedule change beyond a threshold you set, it emails you alternative flight options, each with a short explanation of why it's a strong pick - plus the airline's confirmed reason for the disruption. That last detail matters: ExpertFlyer normally only lets you retrieve a delay or cancellation reason within three days before a flight or seven days after, so having it stored in your inbox is handy for compensation claims. Two caveats: the beta currently only considers one leg at a time on multi-leg journeys (a fix is in the works), and the suggested alternatives are a starting point rather than a complete solution - check the airline's own options too.
ExpertFlyer has also added support for newer users, who often find the tool intimidating. There's a new blog covering basics like checking availability and the difference between open and available seats, plus free monthly interactive webinars open to all members. And travel creators can now join an affiliate programme run through Awin, earning up to 30% commission - nearly $72 on a single Elite annual referral.
Why it matters: during major disruptions, rebooking seats vanish fast. Getting an email with alternative flights the moment something breaks - before the queue at the service desk even forms - can be the difference between a smooth pivot and a night in the terminal. If you book flights regularly and already pay for ExpertFlyer Premium or Elite, the automated alerts alone are worth ten minutes of setup. Casual flyers probably don't need a subscription just for this, but the free webinars are a low-risk way to see whether the tool earns its keep.
