Winter is coming, and Calgary travellers have more escape routes than ever. WestJet has been quietly building out its sun-and-sand route map from YYC, and there are now five warm-weather destinations you can reach without a single layover — from a quick desert hop to a marathon run down to Brazil.

The headline news is São Paulo. WestJet launches a non-stop Calgary–São Paulo route this December, and at roughly 12 hours and 50 minutes in the air, it's the longest of the bunch — better suited to a big, proper trip than a long weekend. The payoff is Brazil's largest city: street art in Beco do Batman, the São Paulo Museum of Art, and long afternoons in Ibirapuera Park, all backed by one of the world's great food scenes.

If Mexico is more your speed, skip Cancun and consider Tulum instead. The direct flight takes about six hours, and you get Caribbean water, beach clubs, clifftop Mayan ruins and — the real draw — cenotes, the freshwater sinkholes scattered around the region that make for some of the best swimming anywhere in the country.

Two more options sit in the same roughly seven-hour flight band. Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic (about six hours and 50 minutes, seasonal) is classic all-inclusive territory, with catamaran cruises, snorkelling and day trips to Saona Island for even more white sand. Liberia, Costa Rica, also just under seven hours, works as a gateway to Guanacaste, where you can zipline through rainforest, soak in hot springs, chase waterfalls, spot monkeys and still fit in a surf session — a good pick if you want more than a beach chair.

Short on time? Palm Springs is the speedy option at just over three hours non-stop. No ocean, but there's pool weather, mid-century modern architecture, mountain views, downtown dining and the Aerial Tramway, which hauls you up the San Jacinto Mountains for a completely different climate at the top.

The common thread is convenience. Flying non-stop from Calgary means no connecting gamble through a US hub, no extra overnight, and a much shorter door-to-beach timeline — a real difference when your holiday is only a week long. Beach lovers, adventure seekers and city-break fans all have a fit on this list; the main decision is how long you're willing to sit on a plane. Three hours to palm trees or thirteen to Brazil? Either way, the snow stays behind you. Thanks to Curiocity for the roundup.
