Wild ponies graze outside the windows, pizza bakes in your own garden oven, and a chef appears in your kitchen to cook dinner. That is the deal at Forest House, a newly opened five-bedroom private home in the grounds of the Lime Wood hotel in Hampshire's New Forest.
The house sleeps 10 adults plus babies, each bedroom with its own en suite, making it a natural fit for big family gatherings or a group of friends. Interiors come from Susie Atkinson, whose bold colours, stripes-versus-florals mixing and high ceilings give it a smart-but-unstuffy country-house feel. The master suite has a four-poster bed, beamed ceiling and standalone tub; smaller rooms include a charming blue-and-red twin over a double.
The hospitality leans heavily personal. Guests fill in a pre-arrival form, and the team genuinely acts on it — the writer's group arrived to a chocolate birthday cake for a parent, a cot and tractor toys for the baby, and a row of Hunter wellies in ascending sizes. The kitchen is stocked on arrival with local wine, breakfast provisions, fresh eggs and baked sourdough, so there's no need to shop.
Experiences extend well beyond the house. There's a guided foraging walk through the forest with Lime Wood's in-house forager, access to the Herb House spa and pool, and — the standout — a private evening where staff come to you: a bartender mixing margaritas in the garden at sunset, followed by chef-cooked Italian dishes like focaccia, gnocchi and a family-style tiramisu. Turndown service still happens even though you're self-contained. Meanwhile the New Forest's free-roaming ponies drift past throughout, adding a surreal touch to morning coffee.
For travellers who like hotel polish without hotel corridors, Forest House sits in a sweet spot: total privacy, generous space for a multigenerational group, and Lime Wood's service a call away. It's expensive by nature of being a whole house, but for 10 people sharing, the per-head maths can be surprisingly reasonable compared with booking multiple rooms at a top-tier hotel.
